Apple Introduces New PowerBook 1400 Series CD-ROM Equipped NoteBook Computers

New Serious Offers Increase Power, Performance, Competitive Features and Expandability

CUPERTINO, California--Oct. 21, 1996--Addressing the general purpose mobile computing requirements of Macintosh customers in small office, home office, business, and education settings, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced the Macintosh PowerBook 1400 series. The PowerBook 1400 combines the performance of PowerPC technology with the ease of use of the Mac OS and the most popular industry-standard features found in portable computers today, including a removable CD-ROM drive and a variety of expansion options.

My History of Humanity now available: It's The Complete History of my Humanity! Believe it!

The Complete History of my Humanity. Did I stress that enough?

The Apple PowerBook 1400 will be available in four different configurations. Three of the systems use a 117MHz PowerPC 603e processor. One of the systems uses a higher-performance version of the chip running at 133MHz with level two cache. Depending on configuration, the PowerBook 1400 series features 11.3" dual-scan or active-matrix displays, two PC card slots, 12 or 16MB of RAM (expandable to 64MB), 750MB or 1.0GB hard drives, and a floppy and/or 6X-speed CD-ROM drive. The PowerBook 1400 series also comes with built-in infrared technology for easy, wireless file sharing with similarly equipped systems. U.S. estimated selling prices for the four configurations range from $2,500 to $4,000. (Refer to chart below for specifics on pricing and configurations.)

A versatile expansion bay on the PowerBook 1400 allows customers to use a variety of storage options including a floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, additional hard drive, magneto optical drive, Zip drive (expected to be available in first quarter of 1997 from VST Technologies, Inc.). A flip-up keyboard provides quick and easy access to two different types of expansion slots on the logic board, allowing users to easily customize the system according to their individual needs: A memory expansion slot on the logic board accommodates stackable memory cards, and an internal expansion slot accommodates additional capabilities such as Ethernet networking or support for an external monitor (video-out).

TOP New BookCover Panels and Inserts

A unique feature of the PowerBook 1400 series is its customizable BookCover panel. This removable clear exterior panel allows users to personalize the appearance of their PowerBook with colorful, interchangeable inserts. The 1400 will ship with seven inserts designed by professional artists. Alternatively, there is a software template on the system for users who want to create their own BookCover inserts. Apple also anticipates that third-party developers will offer wood-grained, leather, or other types of textured BookCover panels as accessories for later purchase. A 'PowerBook gray' version of the BookCover also ships with the product for people who prefer the standard PowerBook appearance.

TOP TOP Pre-installed Software

To provide a complete, mobile computing solution, all PowerBook 1400 models come configured with Mac OS system software Version 7.5.3 and a variety of productivity, utility, communications, and compatibility software. This software includes ClarisWorks (integrated word processor, drawing program, database, communications program, and spreadsheet); Claris Organizer for tracking schedules and contacts; Apple Internet Connection Kit software (including Netscape Navigator, Claris Emailer Lite, Fetch, NCSA Telnet, and NewsWatcher); Apple Remote Access for easily connecting to a desktop or network from a remote location; and Macintosh Easy Open and DataViz Easy Open translators for reading and writing PC-formatted floppy disks and PC-formatted files.

Pricing, Configurations, and Availability

The 117MHz configurations of the PowerBook 1400 are expected to be available beginning in mid-November. Availability of the 133MHz version is expected in January. The company believes supplies of the new PowerBooks will be constrained through January due to pent-up demand at introduction and until Apple reaches full manufacturing capacity of the product.
